Wired vs. Wireless Security Cameras: Which Is Better for Your Toronto Home?

By Ilan Nahum , Blaze Alarms, installing cameras in Toronto since 1990  |  Updated October 2026  |  5 min read

For a permanent home or business system in Toronto, wired cameras are the better choice: they don’t drop out, don’t need charging, and don’t charge you monthly fees. Wireless cameras still make sense in a few situations. Here’s an honest comparison.

How each one works

  • Wired (PoE) cameras connect with one network cable that carries both power and video to a recorder (NVR) inside your home. PoE stands for Power over Ethernet.
  • Wireless cameras send video over your Wi-Fi to the cloud or a hub. Many still need a power cord, and battery models need regular charging.

Side-by-side

Wired PoE cameras Wireless and battery cameras
Reliability Stays online even when Wi-Fi is down Drops out with weak Wi-Fi or interference
Power Powered through the cable, nothing to charge Battery models need charging, worse in the cold
Video quality Records full resolution, 24/7 Often lower quality and records only clips to save battery
Winter Built for Toronto winters Batteries drain faster below freezing
Monthly fees None: footage stays on your own recorder Often $10 to $30 a month for cloud recording
Jamming No wireless signal to block A Wi-Fi jammer can knock them offline
Installation Professional install, cables hidden in walls and soffits Quick to put up yourself
Upfront cost Higher Lower

When wired is the right choice

  • You want a system that works every day for years, not one you have to babysit.
  • You need clear footage of faces and licence plates.
  • You don’t want to pay a monthly fee to watch your own recordings.
  • You want recording that continues during an internet outage.

This covers most homes and almost every business.

When wireless can make sense

  • Renters who can’t run cables.
  • A temporary spot, like a cottage gate or a construction trailer.
  • One or two cameras where running a cable is truly impossible.

Won’t wired cameras mean holes and messy wires?

Not with a professional install. We run cables through attics, basements and soffits and mount cameras under the eaves, so the wiring is hidden. Most homes are finished in one day.

Can I still watch wired cameras on my phone?

Yes. A wired system connects to your home internet through the recorder, and you watch live or recorded video with a free app such as Dahua DMSS or Luminys LumiViewer, with no monthly fees. If the internet goes down, the cameras keep recording to the recorder.

The bottom line

Wireless cameras are easy to buy. Wired cameras are easier to live with. For a system you can count on, choose wired. See our wired systems: 4 Security Starlight Cameras, 6 Security Starlight Cameras and the 4K Security Camera Package.
