The right installer matters as much as the cameras. A great camera in the wrong spot, or a system nobody supports after installation, leaves you exposed. Here’s what to check before you hire anyone in Toronto.
1. Know what you need first
Before you call around, list the areas you want covered: doors, driveway, yard, garage, or for a business the cash area, stock room and parking. Decide whether you need to see that something happened, or identify who did it. A good installer will build on that list, not replace it with a one-size-fits-all kit.
2. Look at experience and reviews
Years in business tell you a company has stood behind its work. Reviews tell you how it treats customers. Read recent Google reviews, especially the ones that mention service calls months or years after installation. Ask friends and neighbours who they used, and whether they’d use them again.
3. Insist on a site visit
A proper quote starts with someone walking your property. They should check lighting at night, cable routes, Wi-Fi and internet, and where each camera needs to go. Be wary of a firm price over the phone for a system nobody has seen installed in your space.

4. Ask what equipment they install
Ask for the brand, the camera resolution (4MP, 5MP or 8MP 4K), and the type of night vision. A professional installer uses outdoor-rated cameras, hard-wired PoE cabling and a recorder (NVR) that stays in your property. Ask whether the recorder has spare channels in case you want more cameras later.
5. Compare clear, written quotes
A trustworthy company gives you an itemized, written quote: the number of cameras, the recorder, the hard drive size, installation and warranty. Compare what’s included, not just the total. A cheap quote that leaves out cabling, the hard drive or app setup isn’t cheaper.
Also ask about monthly fees. A professionally installed system with its own recorder shouldn’t need any.
6. Check the warranty and after-install support
Ask how long the warranty lasts and what it covers: parts, labour or both. Then ask what happens when you need help, such as a camera that goes offline, a new phone that needs the app, or footage you need to save for the police. The best installers answer their phone years after the job.
7. Make sure they think about privacy
A good installer angles cameras to cover your property, not your neighbours’ windows or yard, and can explain the rules for homes and businesses. Read more in Is It Legal to Install CCTV Outside My House in Toronto?
8. Plan for the future
Your needs can change: a renovation, a new garage, a second location. Choose a company that installs systems you can expand, and that keeps up with current features like AI person and vehicle detection, two-way audio and colour night vision.
Questions to ask every installer
- How long have you been in business, and can I see your reviews?
- Will you visit my property before quoting?
- What brand and resolution are the cameras?
- Are there any monthly fees?
- What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
- Do you set up the app on my phone before you leave?
- Who do I call if something stops working?
